How Georgia DMV Fees Are Calculated in 2026
Georgia replaced traditional sales tax and annual ad valorem tax with a unique system in 2013: the Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT). You pay 7% of the vehicle's fair market value once at the time of purchase or title transfer — and that's it for taxes. No annual property tax, no sales tax.
Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) — 7%
The TAVT is 7% of the vehicle's fair market value as determined by the Georgia Department of Revenue. This is a one-time fee paid at registration. It replaces both:
- Sales tax (which used to be 6%–8% depending on county)
- Annual ad valorem "birthday tax" (previously paid each year)
Annual registration fees
After paying TAVT, annual costs are much simpler: $20 base tag fee plus county fees. Most Georgians pay $50–$90/year total for renewal.
County ad valorem tax
Vehicles registered before March 1, 2013 still pay the old annual ad valorem system. For post-2013 registered vehicles on the TAVT system, no annual property tax applies.
Georgia EV
Electric vehicles pay TAVT at the same 7% rate. There is currently no EV registration surcharge in Georgia (unlike TX, OH, IL).
